Missing Evan every day. I have so many amazing memories of him, going back to grade school at Camino Pablo in Moraga to goofing off during football practice in high school to skiing in Tahoe to living together in Santa Barbara to visiting him in Boston and New York to our unforgettable years together in LA when he was recording his first two albums and playing shows. I could write novels worth of memories about Evan (and intend to as I muster the courage).
During our time in LA, I was sort of like a roadie for his band, Ansel, because I wasn't talented enough to actually be in the band, but also because I had an SUV (the fabled Nissan Pathfinder) and so I was the de facto transporter of drums and amps to his shows all over town. At the time (2007–2011), I was also a technology reporter and had several handheld video recorders for review. (I still had a flip phone at the time and this was before phones had good built-in cameras anyway.) As a result, I had gotten in the habit of recording video at a lot of Evan's shows, practices, and studio recording sessions.
Here is a recording from one of Evan's solo shows at O'Brien's Irish Pub on Main Street in Santa Monica, a spot we frequented for beers and failed attempts at picking up girls. I have the entire set on video, but for now just want to share one of my favorite Evan songs, "Reflex Pandemonium," recorded on February 23, 2009. Enjoy!
